We spotlight the most egregious misrepresentations of U.S. History in the past year by politicians, celebrities, executives, and more. Awards are announced in December.
Award #1: The Weemsy of the Year for 2025 - The Person Who Said the Most Ridiculous and/or Demonstrably False Statements About U.S. History – Pete Hegseth for earning SIX nominations for f1) renaming 7 military bases for Confederate generals who fought against the US to preserve slavery for all time; 2) saying of the soldiers who carried out the infamous Wounded Knee Massacre that killed hundreds of Native Americans, “we salute their memory, we honor their service” and that they would retain their Medals of Honor; 3) declaring the US bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities “the most complex and secretive military operation in history”; 4) purging Pentagon websites of information about notable African Americans (Jackie Robinson, the Tuskegee Airmen), Native Americans (Navajo Code Talkers), women (Civil War nurses), and Asians (442nd Combat Unit); 5) ordering the return of a portrait of Confederate general Robert E. Lee (who committed treason against the US) to the library at West Point; 6) ordering the return of a Confederate monument featuring racist, proslavery imagery to Arlington National Cemetery. Runner-up: Donald J. Trump for falsely claiming that 1) the birthright citizenship provision of the 14th Amendment was only “meant for babies of slaves”; 2) the Declaration of Independence was about “love” and “unity”; 3) the US was at its richest in the 1890s (due to tariffs); 4) 38,000 Americans died in the building of the Panama Canal; 5) “we've never had a president that solved one war”; 6) half of US presidents have invoked the Insurrection Act; 7) President Reagan “loved tariffs”; 8) previous presidents going back 150 years have wanted a grand ballroom added to the White House; 9) flags have never been at half staff during a presidential inauguration to honor the passing of a prominent figure; 10) President William McKinley was “a very successful businessman” who also served in the Senate; 11) Adolph Hitler spoke at the Eiffel Tower during WWII; 12) his “Big Beautiful Bill” is “the most popular bill ever signed in the history of our country.”
Note: Trump won Weemsy of the Year in 2024 which made him ineligible for this year’s prize (rules do not allow for consecutive year winners)
